Botany for Foragers, Herbalists, & Everyone Else - 1/11/20 (KY/OH)
Up your wild plant game!
Whether you’re a forager, herbalist, or wild adventurer, being able to identify plants and mushrooms in the forests and fields, will help you feel more confident or even save your life. Winter is the perfect time to start learning these skills! If you can identify a tree in winter, with no leaves, flowers, or fruit, you’ll know it the rest of your life.
We’ll go out for a plant walk, length dependent on weather. We'll look at twigs, buds, and any leaves or fruits that hang out during winter. While we’re out, we’ll harvest some samples to bring back to study. When we get inside with a warm cup of tea, you’ll get an intro to basic botany before we create our own field guides. If you have your own journal you love, please bring it, or materials will be provided. We'll also, of course, talk about the wild edible and medicinal aspects of these plants.
It’s super important to dress in warm layers with a hat and gloves and warm boots for uneven terrain. Bring a basket or bag for collecting and a pair of pruners if you have them. An insulated mug would be great if you want to bring some hot tea outside to keep you warm, and any snacks that you need. Tea will be provided.
